A Shtetl

Bubba’s Waltz (across Texas)
Bubba’s Waltz is original Klezmer by trumpeter/vocalist/leader Bill Averbach and his band the Austin Klezmorim. The recording is a retrospect on Averbach’s thirty years in Texas. It is a juxtaposition of bubbas and bubbies (Yiddish for grandmother), latkes with salsa, kosher hot dogs and BBQ, yarmulkes and cowboy hats, white shrimper's boots and where the buffalo roam, dreydles and dreadlocks, Odessa, Palestine, Austin and Port Aransas, the Texas Jewboys and the Jewish good ‘ole boys.

Founded in 1979 the Austin Klezmorim are the oldest band of klezmer in the Southwest. They have performed concerts and festivals throughout the U.S. and hosted workshops and master classes at numerous colleges and universities, and their music is a mix of the traditional and modern. It is original klezmer with a little bit of Jazz and Texas in the mix. It is echoes of the Mezz and the “klez” struttin' that kosher BBQ.

Averbach injects humor and anecdotes about the music and history behind the pieces played. He references jazz of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s and even cartoon music while tying everything together utilizing the talents of some of the Texas' finest musicians.

Bubba’s Waltz is a modern day Texas Klezmer Odyssey. The music reflects on life as a musician and Yid in Texas. The players joining Bill Averbach on the journey include the fantastic fiddling of David H. Perales, the remarkable Alex Coke on reeds and flute, the insightful guitar work of Russell Scanlon, the exceptional fingers and mind of Mark Rubenstein on piano and accordion, David Levy on drums, and the indisputable defender of undertones Larry Eisenberg on bass.
