Desert Lullaby

Alevi is Osher Levi and John Alevizakis, and this is the story of how "The Red Sea" album was created.... In 2005 we found ourselves in the old port town of Jaffa, Israel. It claimed to be the oldest port town in history, having been occupied by everyone from the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Turks, etc etc.. We were subleting our friend's apartment for a few months while deciding whether or not Israel would become our new home. The apartment was located in the old port, once an Arab settlement, now a collection of Israeli art studios, homes, and galleries. It almost felt like we were in a dream, walking among the ancient stone homes and archways, through the mazes of timeless alleys that descended eventually into the Mediteranean sea. Alot of the actual recording of "The Red Sea" was done in the Jaffa apartment, amidst the ambience of local fishermen, bustling markets, chants from the minarettes, bells of the local Greek church, and the numerous cats running through the alleys. The actual writing of "The Red Sea" music, however, took place in the Sinai desert, on the Egyptian side of the Israel/Egypt border, a land of vast barren desert mountains contrasted by the deep blue waters of the Red Sea. It was in this ancient desert, the home of Mount Sinai, where Moses encountered the burning bush, where the Red Sea parted, and where now the nomadic Beduins and their camels roam, that Alevi's "The Red Sea" album was born. Much of the music of the album echoes the rythm and the spirit of this land, a music of the desert and its people, a music that transcends time. The song ideas were recorded on a Sony mini-disk recorder, sometimes by the shore of the Red Sea (as heard on the intro of the song "To the Mirror"), and often deep in the canyons of the desert. Back in Jaffa we added tracks on our laptop, including ney by Amir, and percussion by Avi Agababa, recorded in his stone-walled apartment in the spaces between the banging shutters and the loud neighbourhood. After 6 months we decided to return to California, where the songs were mixed at Little Buddha Studio, in San Rafael. We hope you enjoy the journey, Osher and John Osher and John are currently performing and recording as part of the trio "To Life!" (myspace.com/dreamtimemusic), a world acoustic trance music group based in the San Fransisco area.
